This is a Preview, not a review — Gears of War: E-Day has not been released yet, so it hasn’t been scored and nothing here reflects hands-on play. It’s based on the gameplay demo shown at Xbox Games Showcase 2026 and official Xbox/Coalition announcements. See How We Review for how Previews differ from Reviews on this site.

Why this one matters

E-Day covers the single most consequential day in the Gears of War timeline — the Locust Horde’s emergence from underground and its overwhelming of the surface world. Every mainline Gears game since the original has referenced this day; this is the first time players will actually experience it, with two protagonists whose eventual fates are already known from the existing games. That’s an unusual structural choice — the tension isn’t “will they survive,” it’s “how did the world get here.”

What the demo showed

The gameplay reveal at Xbox Games Showcase 2026 focused on new traversal options — sliding and crawling — alongside heavier artillery compared to the series’ established arsenal, framed as tools for surviving an enemy players (in-universe) have never faced before. The Locust Horde is shown as a genuinely unfamiliar threat rather than the established enemy type from later games.

Development pedigree

The Coalition has owned the Gears of War franchise since Gears 4 and knows the tone and mechanics the series is built on. People Can Fly brings experience from Outriders and Bulletstorm — both games with a heavier, more chaotic combat sensibility. That combination is worth watching for whether E-Day leans closer to Gears’ methodical cover-based roots or something more aggressive.

What we’re still watching for

The gameplay demo answered the “how does it play” question reasonably well, but several structural questions remain open — see the Key Questions above. We’ll update this preview as more is confirmed ahead of the October 6 release.
