Design and build

The S26 Ultra retains Samsung’s boxy Ultra design language, built with an aluminum frame, Corning Gorilla Armor 2 front glass, and a Gorilla Glass Victus 2 back. At 214g it’s noticeably heavier than most competing flagships, including the iPhone 17 Pro’s 206g. The standout new feature is a hardware-level “Privacy Display” that limits screen visibility from off-axis angles — the first phone to ship this, according to Samsung.

Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, built on a 3nm process, is paired with 12GB or 16GB of RAM depending on configuration. On paper this is the fastest Android chipset available at launch. We have not independently benchmarked the device.

Camera

The quad rear system pairs a 200MP main sensor with a 50MP ultrawide, a 50MP periscope module (5x optical zoom), and a 10MP telephoto (3x optical zoom) — four genuinely distinct focal lengths rather than a main sensor propped up by digital crop. The front camera is a 12MP sensor.

Display

A 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED panel runs up to 120Hz at WQHD+ resolution, with the new Privacy Display technology layered on top — a first for the industry as far as our research found, rather than a software-level blur or filter.

Battery and charging

The 5000mAh battery is unchanged in capacity from the prior generation, but charging speed jumps to 60W wired (Samsung quotes 75% in 30 minutes) and 25W wireless via Qi2.2 — both real improvements over the S25 Ultra’s 45W wired ceiling.

Software

Samsung is shipping One UI 8.5 on Android 16 with a commitment to 7 major OS upgrades and 7 years of security updates — matching the longest support windows in the Android space and directly competing with Apple’s own update longevity.

Price and value

Starting at $1,299.99 for 256GB, the S26 Ultra sits at the very top of the market. The case for it over the iPhone 17 Pro comes down to whether you want the S Pen, prefer Android, or specifically value the Privacy Display feature — the core photography and performance capabilities are close enough that ecosystem and feature preferences will likely decide it for most buyers.

How does the Privacy Display actually work, and when should I use it? It’s built into the panel itself using Samsung’s Flex Magic Pixel technology, which controls light direction at the pixel level to dim the screen for anyone viewing from the side while staying full-brightness for you head-on — it doesn’t affect your own view of colors or brightness. You can toggle it manually from Quick Settings or set it to switch on automatically for specific apps (banking apps, messaging), which is the more useful mode for commuting or working in a café.
