Our take: Cautiously optimistic

What we know so far

  • Releases February 23, 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, day one on Xbox Game Pass
  • Premium Edition buyers get five days of early access from February 18; Standard is $69.99 and Premium is $99.99
  • Developed by Playground Games, best known for the Forza Horizon series, with Xbox Game Studios publishing
  • Originally announced in 2020; the release date was confirmed in 2026 after delays, with Xbox's Matt Booty saying the studio wanted the game to have "a window of its own" rather than launch close to Grand Theft Auto 6
  • Gamescom 2026 brought a hands-on combat demo and official combat and quest gameplay videos, the first real look at how it plays
  • Third-person combat blends melee, ranged weapons and magic in what the developers call "style-weaving"
  • The world of Albion has over 1,000 simulated NPCs, a morality system and a customisable Hero
  • It is the first core Fable game to come to PlayStation

Key questions

  • Does the full open-world RPG, with its choices, NPC simulation and morality, hold up outside a short, curated demo?
  • Does the magic system, which uses cooldowns, give players enough freedom to build a pure mage or a pure archer?
  • Can a studio known for racing games deliver a long RPG with writing, humour and consequence on the level of the series' best?

This is a Preview, not a review. Fable has not been released, so it has not been scored, and we have not played it. Our first version of this page, written before Gamescom, was based on trailers alone. This update adds what has been shown since: a hands-on combat demo, official combat and quest gameplay videos, and published impressions. Everything is secondhand, and we say where sources disagree. See How We Review for how Previews differ from Reviews on this site.

The short version

Fable is a third-person action role-playing game set in Albion, the fairy-tale kingdom the series is known for. This is a reboot, not a sequel: Playground Games’ director Ralph Fulton has said it would be inauthentic to try to make “Fable 4”, so the world is a new interpretation, not connected to the original trilogy.

The release date is February 23, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and PlayStation 5. It is the first core Fable game to launch on PlayStation, and it arrives on Xbox Game Pass on day one. That is a long wait for a game first announced in 2020, and the schedule has slipped more than once. But the Gamescom material has changed the conversation, because for the first time there is real gameplay to talk about.

A long road to February 2027

It is worth knowing how it got here, because it affects how much trust to place in the dates. Fable was first announced in 2020 and, after being pushed out of an earlier target, was aimed at a 2026 window. In May 2026, Xbox confirmed the move to February 23, 2027. Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty said on the record that the studio wanted the game to have “a window of its own” rather than launch close to Grand Theft Auto 6.

That is the stated reason, and it is a reasonable one. But a company rarely volunteers “we needed more development time” as a public explanation, even when that is also true, so we treat it as the confirmed explanation, not necessarily the complete one. The practical advice is the same either way: plan for February, but do not be shocked by further movement.

What Gamescom showed

Gamescom 2026 was the first time Playground showed real gameplay in detail. The public could not play it, but there was a live demo theatre at the Xbox booth focused on combat, followed by two official videos: a roughly 16-minute combat gameplay video and a quest gameplay video, released in late August.

Combat: “style-weaving”

The developers describe the combat as style-weaving, meaning you flow between melee, ranged and magic without stopping to open a menu. According to Xbox Wire’s explainer, you hold the right trigger and press face buttons to cast spells, use ranged attacks or strike in melee, and you can use all of them together.

The details are concrete:

  • Melee. Two-handed weapons, such as the Bower Hammer, hit multiple enemies. There is dodging and parrying, and a successful parry can dismember a foe and leave them vulnerable. Weapons also have their own finishing moves.
  • Magic. There are four spell slots. The spells shown include Fireball, Lightning that chains between enemies, Blades, Lift (crowd control with slams), Rush (a teleport), Push (a knockback) and Befowl, which turns enemies into harmless chickens. That last one is a nice reminder that the series’ humour is intact.
  • Ranged. Weapons like the Deepwood Bow and the Repeater Crossbow reward hitting weak spots, cause unarmoured enemies to stumble, and help against flying foes.
  • Enemies. The demo featured Hollow Folk (skeleton variants with armour), Wraiths (fast ghosts that spawn more enemies) and a Lantern Keeper mini-boss with unblockable attacks and projectiles.
  • Builds. Equipment choices change your playstyle, so you can lean towards ranged, close-up, evasive or area-damage approaches.

The quest video

The quest video follows a mission through Bowerstone, the series’ reimagined capital. It shows the world’s depth, with the presentation saying you can go inside every building and buy every house, and it shows how choice and consequence can play out. You also meet Humphry, described as the disgraced leader of the Heroes’ Guild.

How did the hands-on feel?

The published impressions are encouraging. Reviewers who played the combat demo described it as intuitive and frictionless, with easy transitions between melee, ranged attacks and spellcasting and a sense of impact in every input. One writer was so taken with it that they played the same demo twice with different builds and difficulties. Windows Central’s headline captures the mood: Playground may be pulling off something special, but the real test awaits.

That last part matters. A combat demo shows one slice of a game, built to impress. The things that made Fable special in the past, the writing, the humour, the consequences of your choices, are things a short demo cannot prove.

Reasons for caution

There are fair reasons to keep expectations measured.

Magic limits. Some players who watched the footage were disappointed that magic runs on cooldowns and arrows recharge, and worry this means you cannot play as a pure mage or pure archer. We have not seen a developer response, so this is a concern, not a confirmed design flaw.

Production polish. There were also comments about the production quality of some cutscenes. These are viewer reactions to released footage, not critic findings, so treat them lightly.

A genre change. Playground Games is best known for the Forza Horizon racing series. The studio has made a vast, impressive open world before, but a story-driven RPG with branching consequences is a different discipline. Support came from Eidos-Montréal, Third Kind Games and Blizzard’s cinematics team, per Wikipedia, which suggests the studio knows it needs help.

Delays. The game has slipped more than once. That does not mean it will be bad, but it means the February 2027 date is the best estimate, not a guarantee.

What the world promises

On paper, the design goals are ambitious. According to published details, Albion has more than 1,000 individually simulated NPCs, each with a persistent daily routine that continues when you are not watching, and a morality system where your choices shape your reputation and your relationships. You create your own Hero, choosing heads, clothing, hair, skin tone, tattoos and scars. The game reportedly includes more than 150,000 lines of dialogue, recorded over 1,000 hours of voice sessions, with around 100 actors.

The story begins in the village of Briar Hill, where a mysterious stranger petrifies the inhabitants, setting you off on a search for answers. Hayley Atwell plays Isabel, “Hero of Wraithmarsh”, teased as a potential antagonist, and the game runs on ForzaTech, the engine behind the Forza games, with substantial custom technology added for character-focused play. Multiplayer details have not been announced, and previous Fable games had only limited co-op.

Price, editions and platforms

Three editions have been offered: Standard at $69.99, Premium at $99.99, and a Collector’s Edition. The Premium Edition adds five days of early access beginning February 18, armour sets, the Fable: Order of the Hero expansion and a digital artbook and soundtrack. The Collector’s Edition sold out quickly and, per reports, sold out indefinitely on June 23, 2026. Confirm all of this on the Xbox store before you pre-order, because editions can change.

Fable is also an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so a single Xbox purchase covers both console and PC, and it is included in Game Pass at launch.

Our read: why we are still “cautiously optimistic”

We said in our first version that we wanted to see real gameplay before updating our view. Now we have, and the combat looks like a strong foundation. That is real progress. But the game’s value will depend on whether the choices, the writing and the world hold up across a long RPG, and none of that has been shown in a way anyone can judge yet. So our stance stays at cautiously optimistic, with a bias towards the optimistic side.

If you have Game Pass, there is little reason to worry about the pre-order question, since you can play it at launch. If you are weighing a $69.99 or $99.99 pre-order, we would wait for reviews. They will arrive just before or at release, and a few days’ wait costs you very little.

While you wait

Fable is still months away. If you want something to play now, our 007 First Light review and Pragmata review cover two recent single-player games, and our Gears of War: E-Day review covers the big Xbox release landing on October 6.

FAQ

Has Fable been delayed? Yes. It was originally being targeted for a 2026 window, but in May 2026 Xbox confirmed it had moved to February 23, 2027. Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty said the studio wanted the game to have “a window of its own” rather than launch close to Grand Theft Auto 6, an on-the-record reason, not just outside speculation.

What platforms is the new Fable releasing on? PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass, confirmed for February 23, 2027. It is the first core Fable game to come to PlayStation.

Who is developing the new Fable, and have they made an RPG before? Playground Games, published by Xbox Game Studios. Playground is best known for the Forza Horizon racing series, so this is a genre change for the studio, which is part of why we are rating our anticipation as “cautiously optimistic” rather than higher.

How much will Fable cost? Reported pricing is $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Premium Edition, which adds five-day early access, armor sets, the Fable: Order of the Hero expansion and a digital artbook and soundtrack. A Collector’s Edition has also been offered. Confirm on the Xbox store before pre-ordering, since editions can change.

Is Fable an Xbox Play Anywhere game? Yes, per Xbox’s store page. It is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so a single Xbox purchase covers both Xbox console and PC, and it is included in Game Pass on day one.

What does Fable gameplay look like? Gamescom 2026 brought a hands-on combat demo and official combat and quest gameplay videos. Combat mixes melee, ranged weapons and magic in a style the developers call style-weaving, with spells such as Fireball, Lightning and a chicken-transforming spell called Befowl.

Is Fable open world, and can you play it co-op? Albion is described as an open world with more than 1,000 simulated NPCs. Multiplayer or co-op has not been announced, so assume it is a single-player game until Xbox says otherwise.
